Quitting my day job on October 31st 2024

On October 31st 2024 I am going to quit my day job. It will be a Thursday.

Why will I be quitting my day job?

Well, if all goes well with book sales as an author (see amazon.com/author/moffat) then I will have reached the point where I will no longer need to work at my regular job and can focus instead on my writing career.

How did I manage to calculate this?

Well... My book sales have been doing really well during the past 3 years. They keep tripling (or more) in volume (and profits) every year. So much so that by 2025 I will be making more money off my book sales than I will be off of my regular job. Way more money.

Being able to live in a cabin in the woods (or an off grid house) is the dream of many writers, as is the dream of becoming a professional full time writer. And my dream is slowly becoming a reality.

I only need to keep on writing, keep getting book sales, keep getting 4/5 star reviews for another...

1,179 days.

That isn't that long to wait really. I will be 45 years old by then.

The thing about book sales is that it is all about residual income. Regardless of whether you go the traditional publishing route (where they pay you a lump sum advance and then residuals) or if you self-publish (where you get all of the profit, but it comes more slowly in the form of larger residuals), the result is roughly the same: Continuing profits over a longer time period.

In fact there is an argument these days that self-publishing is actually more profitable for the writer because their books never get pulled off the shelves and disappear, whereas that can happen to older authors who will see their books discontinued due to lack of sales.

So the book selling market is naturally shifting towards more self-publishing and authors realizing that maybe traditional publishing isn't all it is cracked up to be. Works great for brand name authors like Stephen King and George R. R. Martin, but for authors who want to be able to support themselves financially it makes more sense to just focus on self-publishing and then only get a literary agent to push books that the author thinks could be a bestseller.

Eg. I am currently working on a literary fantasy which I am planning to get an agent for. The agent will get 15% of whatever the book sells for to a publisher, but it saves me the stress of having to go through the whole querying process and trying to decide which publisher to go with. By using an agent I get to relax and let them do the hard task of finding the right publisher.

Now the whole quitting my day job on October 31st 2024 idea assumes a number of things...

#1. My annual book sales continue to skyrocket at a rate of 3 times the previous year for the next 3-4 years.

#2. I don't get in some horrible accident that restricts my ability to write / come up with new stories.

#3. I don't change my mind about quitting my day job on that date.

#4. That I remember I wrote this and set it as a goal.

That's really what I am doing right now. I am setting a goal of quitting my day job so I can relax, write, buy an off grid home, and focus on the things that make me happy.

After all who would do all that if it was NOT making you a happier person?

Why has the Sun changed colour during the past 40 years?

Back in the 1980s and earlier, when we looked at the sun it looked distinctly yellow.

Why?

The reason the sun looks yellow to us on Earth is that our atmosphere scatters light from the sun; so the apparent color of the sun changes. This same scattering effect is why the sky looks blue in the day time instead of black, like at night.

However during the past 40 years the colour of the sun has changed, and the scattering effect isn't working any more. Our sun now appears to be white, not yellow.

Now you might wonder, wait what? What has changed???

Well a number of things have changed during the past 40 years.

#1. Our atmosphere has changed. Not a lot, but we definitely have more CO2 and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere now. The makeup of our atmosphere has thus effected the scattering of light.

#2. Our sun has changed its sunspot frequency. Our sun is continually changing and goes through an 11 year solar cycle in which sun spot frequency goes up and down, But roughly every 400 years our sun also goes through a different cycle which is longer, during which it reaches a "solar minimum" when sun spots drops to a really low number, it gives off less heat, and the sun's apparent colour also changes.

#3. The sun's electromagnetic sphere is so strong it effects the Earth's electromagnetic sphere. When the sun's electromagnetic sphere weakens it in turn effects the "solar weather" on the sun, and it effects the atmosphere, the atmospheric scattering effect, the earth's magnetic poles (you may have noticed the north pole is not in Canada any more, it is now in Russian territorial waters), and various other things. It is even theorized to effect volcanoes, earthquakes and hurricanes.

Altogether this spells disaster during the next 40 years as the sun continues to go through its solar minimum cycle. Go Google "Grand Solar Minimum" if you want to learn more about this topic.

So here is where it gets interesting...

The Grand Solar Minimums often coincides with climate change, social upheavals, and the collapse of empires. Basically the climate suddenly gets a lot colder during a period of roughly 44 years (or longer), and this leads to climate change, crop failures, food shortages, rebellions, governments being overthrown, empires being toppled, etc.

However at the same time we are also dealing with man-made climate change which is making it warmer.

So...

Which will win?

Is man-made climate change stronger than the Grand Solar Minimum? Is man stronger than the sun? In which case maybe it will equal out and we won't notice any big differences in climate change?

Or are we looking at a very bizarre set of circumstances during the next 40+ years and we actually end up with global cooling instead of global warming?

The problem is we don't really know which of these two factors will win. It is kind of a 50/50 situation.

Which means that survivalists / preppers (and solar physicists) are looking at the climate science and going "Hmm???"

And honestly, I am not sure what will happen either.

The science of global warming and climate change is irrefutable.

But the Grand Solar Minimum is happening at the same time...

So it isn't really a done deal for either of them. We are basically looking at a "wait and see" situation where during the next 10 years we will learn which of these two things is more powerful. The sun, or man made global warming.

Wait and see.

In the meantime however I believe we should continue as if Global Warming will win, but prepare for the possibility of Rapid Global Cooling.

Either of these things could lead to massive social unrest if the situation is managed poorly.

Project Gridless YouTube Channel Tops 100 Subscribers

The Project Gridless YouTube Channel recently surpassed 100 subscribers.

Below is our most popular video in which Gary from Basically Bows Archery shows how to build a traditional wooden arrow. The young woman in the video is one of my archery students from years ago.

Gary liked the video so much he used it on his website and later decided to build his own YouTube channel... His channel currently has a whopping 34,900+ subscribers. See Gary Chynne for more details.


The Cottage with Sliding Walls

The cottage in the video below moves, expands and has sliding walls. The architect who made it (for his mother) tends to ramble and repeat himself (something I do myself sometimes), but the concept is an interesting one.




What this home is missing however becomes pretty clear:

#1. A proper kitchen.

#2. A bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower.

#3. A large living space for entertaining guests.

#4. Additional bedrooms.

#5. The space is very narrow.

#6. Don't bother buying lots of stuff. There is very little storage space to be had. No library of books for example.

How could this be design be improved upon?

#1. Instead of 4 sections that slide, have 8 or 10. This would allow for additional rooms containing a kitchen, bathroom, library, etc.

#2. Make the width of the structure bigger. As demonstrated by the architect, a single person can move the individual sections by pulling with 1 hand. By making the sections wider this would add a lot more space in terms of width and it wouldn't feel so narrow and cramped.

#3. Additional structures could be made adjacent to this structure that houses the bathroom, kitchen, etc - but that would require leaving this building and going outside to a different building just to use the bathroom. Not very practical.

#4. Make the sliding section the upper floor of the structure, with the lower floor being stationary and containing all the plumbing - kitchen, bathroom, etc. They could even add extra bedrooms and a 2nd floor balcony if they wanted to.

Note - To make the first floor more interesting it could be built into the side of a hill to offer more insulation, for easier heating and cooling.

Conclusions

At present this cottage is a nice novelty, but it isn't practical to be living in long term. The design definitely needs improvements.

 I am not saying I am for or against this style of compound bow. I haven't shot it. I don't know how well it shoots.

But from a design perspective, whoever engineered this clearly wanted to completely change how a compound bow is supposed to work and threw out all the previous designs to make something completely new and different.

If someone brought me this bow and asked me to repair it I would need to be careful about where to even start, depending on what the exact problem was. It would not be your standard "Oh can you fix my compound bow?" situation. Even if it was a minor repair issue I would be very fascinated to get a look at the inner workings of this bow's unusual design.

Would it be fun to repair? Maybe.

Would it be interesting? Definitely.

According to reviews the bow provides a buttery smooth draw cycle, but with blistering speeds that put even high end crossbows to shame. Clearly STS should be taking this tech and building a crossbow version.

...

Except they do make a crossbow apparently, but it doesn't look anything like the compound bow. More insanity. Below, the STS Raptor 32 Tactical.

Of course they had to put the word "Tactical" in the name. You almost wonder if they did that as a joke. Who is going to buy this???

Exploring Hoggs Falls in Ontario

Hoggs Falls is a relatively small (by my standards) waterfalls north of Flesherton (east of Durham Ontario), but a relatively easy one to visit. Not much of a hike to get to it from the entrance. (Unlike say Hilton Falls, which requires a good long hike to reach.)

As such Hoggs Falls requires less exercise, but is also a smaller reward. Hilton Falls is both bigger (and you can walk behind it), but sadly for the more obese people out there will require you to do more exercise to reach the majestic waterfalls.

Still, Hoggs Falls does have a lot to offer, being quite scenic, a good place for fishing, a good place for picnics, and is free. (I should have mentioned last time there is also a parking fee at Hilton Falls.)

Both Hoggs Falls and Hilton Falls (and any other waterfalls I add in the future, seeing as I have a backlog of old waterfalls videos I have yet to add) can be viewed on my YouTube channel Project Gridless.

In theory a person could attempt to walk behind Hoggs Falls, but I would not recommend it. There isn't a big enough gap between the falls and the back wall of stone, and the rocks are rather slippery. In the 2nd video below I managed to get to the base of the falls by tip-toeing across the rocks, but even that was a balancing act.

"Antler" is a local Toronto restaurant and bar which serves up a variety of options on its menu, including vegan and vegetarian dishes, as well as locally sourced ethical meat such as beef and venison. Venison, for those who don't know, is deer meat.

Venison is tastier than beef, but also more nutritious. Deer thrive in the forest, which also means that consuming venison has a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional cattle livestock.

As such if a person is curious about trying venison, wants a healthier / more ethical alternative to beef, then venison is certainly an option. Also since Antler does source a variety of other ethically grown meats, it is also a good place to try those too.

Myself I have had both venison and moose meat. Both are very tasty, and I would definitely eat them again.

Antler has both a brunch and a dinner menu with a variety of options on both, and I am currently thinking of taking my wife there as a celebration for her graduating from law school. (We might end up going somewhere else, as it will likely come down to my wife's decision. It is her graduation after all, not mine. But maybe I can go to Antler next year for my birthday or some other event.)

Might even take our son with us. He needs to be trying new foods. (He will be be 10 months old a week from now.)

While browsing the dinner menu I also noted the wild boar. Ooooooo! Something I haven't had before, sounds like something to try.

IN THE NEWS

Antler recently got a lot of media attention because of vegans protesting outside of the restaurant. One of the owners, who doubles as a chef/butcher, got frustrated with the vegans constantly and repeatedly protesting outside his restaurant and decided to butcher a leg of deer in the restaurant window for the vegans to watch - you know, to spite them and to send the message that he and his business partner are not about to change their ways.

The vegans, who were effectively trying to extort the business, recorded the butchering and it went viral online and in the news media. And it backfired on them. "Antler" is now more popular than ever and as mentioned above, now requires reservations.

It is so popular I hope they end up opening a second restaurant. The vegans will be truly upset if it comes to that.

Personal Note - I have nothing personal against vegans myself, but I do wish they would mind their own business when it came to promoting their beliefs and not be all Hitler (Hitler was a vegetarian) on trying to force their beliefs on to others. In fact, I have a personal rule that every time a vegan tries to force their beliefs unto me I go out and eat a rabbit, a duck or some other cute tasty animal.

Later the owner/chef/butcher Michel Hunter became internet famous and has since done a number of interviews. Like the following interview with Joe Rogan, who is pro-hunting.



Seeing as I am also trying to build Project Gridless as a YouTube channel, I am also going to reach out shortly to see if we can organize a video interview. So check back in a few weeks and we shall see if I managed to score an interview with Michel, who is really busy these days thanks to all the extra publicity.

UPDATE

So I did get a response, but they are no longer doing interviews and apparently waiting for the fuss to die down.

So here is my thought... wait a few months, contact them then and see if an interview can still be arranged - and perhaps focus on a specific topic such as "The Proper Way to Butcher a Deer" or some similar useful topic.

Hiking and Exploring Hilton Falls

Hiking and exploring a local waterfalls is a good way to get exercise. Hilton Falls, near Milton Ontario, is one of my favourites. My wife and I have gone there multiple times. The videos below are from 4 years ago when I went a bit "Hog Wild" making videos about Hilton Falls.

Luke at the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel is a Marketing Genius

Okay so "Outdoor Boys" is a YouTube channel created by Luke (last name unknown) and frequently featuring his sons and his wife. He does a variety of videos, everything from restoring old axes, making a hunting spear, and other topics Off Gridders like myself would enjoy - often with his kids featuring in the video, which as a father myself, I can appreciate.

The Outdoor Boys video channel currently has over 84,000 subscribers, over 13.5 million views so far, and only 77 videos posted during the last 3 years. So he is only posting roughly 1 video every 2 weeks, and yet clearly knows how to market it.

Having cute kids helps I think.

The one video he made toy swords and shields for two of his boys, and I took one look at that video and said "Yup, that is on the To Do List..."

In the following video posted back in February Luke shows how to turn an old farriers rasp into a knife - a knife that doubles as a rasp and is very useful for starting a fire. So definitely a good video for survivalists to watch. Also good for anyone who likes to recycle things or DIY projects... and its Educational! So woot!


At the end of the video he talks about having a contest for subscribers (it is now April 9th and the contest has been over and done with for over a month), but the manner of the contest is what got me thinking.

He had 4 rules for people to qualify for the contest / draw:

  1. People have to subscribe to his YouTube Channel.
  2. Leave a comment on the video or any of his other videos.
  3. People have to share the video to a social media platform such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  4. People had to accomplish the above three before March 3rd 2018 to qualify. (Again, obviously I am too late for this contest. I only FOUND this YouTube Channel yesterday and have been binge watching it.)

And the prize? A $70 USD DeWalt Angle Grinder.

So why is this marketing genius?

Well, first, I should make clear that he probably didn't come up with this method himself. He probably saw someone else doing it and realized that it is a great way to get lots of "mostly free advertising". I say mostly free because obviously he still has to pay for the $70 Angle Grinder...

But consider this, if 10 people follow the instructions to qualify, he gets the following:

  1. 10 new subscribers, which boosts his visibility on YouTube algorithms.
  2. 10 comments on his videos, which also boosts his visibility on YouTube algorithms.
  3. 10 "advertising posts" on other people's social media platforms, and a variety of them, which boosts his visibility on both Google, YouTube, and directly brings in extra viewers.

And the limited time span ensures he can announce the winner a week later, and other people who view it later (like I did) are more likely to subscribe to his channel both for the great content, but also for the off-chance of being included in a future contest for some other item of value.

Meanwhile someone like myself, who has a background in real estate marketing, looks at this video and thinks: "Wow. That is genius."

And here is the math as to why it is genius.

Yes, it costs him $70 USD + shipping for the contest (although if he orders via Amazon he can probably get free shipping). But the cost of getting 1 person to subscribe, comment and post a free advert on social media has a roughly $30 USD value. I know this because, like I mentioned before, I used to work in marketing.

So if just 3 people follow the instructions fully Luke just got $90 USD worth of advertising for $70.

If 10 people follow the instructions, he just got $300 USD worth of advertising value for $70.

And if more people follow the instructions, well then clearly he is getting his monies worth out of these contests.

Did Luke come up with that method of advertising? Probably not. I have seen similar contests on other YouTube Channels, although usually people just have a policy of Subscribe OR Like OR Comment OR Share... requiring three or four of those kind of deters people from doing all of them, but doing it this way gets the best value.

Now you might think:

Well, wouldn't this be cheaper if he offered a smaller prize, like a pocket knife or something that only costs $10?

Well, yes, but the psychology of it is that people are more likely to follow the more complex instructions of doing all 3 tasks if the prize is actually a lot bigger and more valuable. Subscribes, comments and likes only have a small value to the marketeer. What they really want is the free advertising on the social media platforms and other internet websites (kind of what I am doing right now, except I am doing this for free because I find marketing fascinating).

So imagine if you did a contest for a $10 knife or whatever, and maybe only 2 people actually follow the instructions. Or just one. So that would be a $30 to $60 value for the $10 cost. So a $3 to $6 per dollar expended value.

But if you go for a bigger ticket item, like a tool that is worth $50 you might get 10 or 20 subscribers. Thus you get $300 to $600 value for $50. So that is a $6 to $12 per dollar expended value.

There are ways he could improve upon this however.

1. He could mention the contest over multiple videos to get more bang per dollar out of a single contest. So for example if he is releasing videos on May 1st, May 15th and May 29th he could mention the contest at the end of the videos 3 times, and if it is a nice big ticket prize he will get 3 times as many people signing up. (In theory. In actual practice results may vary, sometimes due to the time of year, the type of prize being given away, and so forth.)

More videos mentioning the contest, more people following the instructions, more value per dollar.

2. He can make the prize himself. So for example when he made the swords/shields for his boys, he could have made an extra set as a contest prize. This cuts down on the financial cost of the prize and only adds the physical time and materials to make the item.

3. Sometimes instead of a plain contest he could make something that is also for sale.

eg. Years ago I bought some antler for carving archery thumb rings, and thanks to the manner I cut them I had enough antler to make 6 rings. I only need 1 for myself obviously, so the other 5 I could sell or use for contests to promote my YouTube Channel.

Thumb Rings on Amazon sell for $10 for a cheap leather one or $32 for a brass one. Nobody on Amazon sells antler thumb rings however, so as exotic materials go it should be worth even more.

4. The prize item could be donated by a company seeking advertising. So for example DeWalt very likely gave that angle grinder for free as a contest item. For Luke this means zero overhead for the cost of prizes and lots of value since it only takes the time to make that aspect of the video.


So wait... how does Luke make money by making these videos?

1. Makers of original content can make money off advertising, typically played before the start of the video by YouTube. Every time an advert is aired before a video, Luke gets paid a share of whatever the company is paying for the advertising.

2. Companies looking for product placement / reviews / etc will often contact popular YouTube video producers with free stuff and offering $$$. The real trick however is to become popular in the first place.

3. If the producer also has a product or service that they can sell, that is an extra way for them to be adding income.


So what about Project Gridless's YouTube Channel?

Well it is at https://www.youtube.com/user/ProjectGridless/ and we have a whopping 40 subscribers and I very rarely even post videos. So far... 20 videos, often on vastly different topics. Most of what is on there is Playlists of videos which were posted by other people. So 40 subscribers for zero videos is actually pretty good in my opinion.

One of these days I should start posting actual videos...

One video per week, or one every two weeks. I could interview people who own off grid homes, do videos about bowmaking or woodworking, go foraging in the woods... any number of topics related to the off grid lifestyle.

How to Build a Wood, Mud and Sod Hut

Anyone familiar with how early Canadian settlers built their homes out of sod should hopefully find this interesting.

In the video below it is called a "house", but I don't really consider what they built to be a house. It is most definitely a hut. Or at very least a tiny home for hobbits. Yeah, Tolkien jokes. Even by hobbit standards however, this is a tiny place to live in.

Still a hut could be useful as shelter, or even could later be modified to be a root cellar for storing food in. For the survivalists this is one option for making a shelter out of pretty basic materials. For the hunters, this could also make a nice ground blind for waiting for the deer or turkeys to pass by.



How to Build a Primitive Shelter with Wood

Below are several videos on this subject of "How to Build a Primitive Shelter".

If possible you will want to have:

  • An axe or similar tool for cutting wood. eg. A saw or bow saw.
  • A knife or similar cutting tool.
  • Cordage, such as twine or something similar which makes a strong cord - eg. Cutting a plastic bottom into a long length of plastic cord is possible if you have a knife handy.
  • Other tools would be potentially be handy, like a hand drill.
There are literally hundreds of ways to build a primitive shelter, but today we will focus on several methods using wood. (In the future I may add other posts about making shelters using clay, sod, stones, snow/ice and other materials.)

The Toronto Tool Library

Nobody paid me to post this. I just happen to like the idea.

The Toronto Tool Library is just like what it sounds like. See https://torontotoollibrary.com/ to learn more about it.

You go to one of the locations, pick up any tools you need just like you would library books, and then return the tools after using them.

Using "tool libraries" saves people money.

An example shown on their website is as follows:

"One of our most popular tools – cordless nail gun – has been borrowed a remarkable 108 times. By sharing this single tool, which retails at $299.00, our members have saved over $32,000!"

The premise is so simple it is amazing it hasn't been done until now.

Years ago I came up with an idea for a Tool Workshop which worked like a gym membership. People pay a monthly membership fee and then can use the tools in the workshop. Instructors in the workshop are available (sort of like personal trainers) to help people to safely use the tools. There is a problem however, my idea called for people transporting whatever project they were working on to the workshop and storing it in a locker and taking it home with them eventually. Transportation could be an issue, depending on the size of the project.

The Toronto Tool Library takes it a step further, allowing people to borrow the tools and take them home for working on whatever project they need the tools for. That solves the problem of project storage, and also providing the space for people to work in.

They also have a number of other services.

Orienteering is not only a fun and rewarding hobby, it’s also a crucial survival skill that could one day save your life.

But orienteering is different from other ‘survival skills’ in that it is something that can be beneficial to almost all of us in practical situations. Let’s be honest, many survival skills are things that we are unlikely to ever need. A lot of survival enthusiasts operate on a ‘what if’ basis. What if I got stranded on an island? What if there was a zombie apocalypse?

But getting lost without GPS is something that still happens to most of us from time to time. And being completely helpful in these situations makes us feel just that: helpless.

So, learn orienteering and be a little less dependent on your phone. Not only could it get you out of a pickle, but it will also hone and train valuable skills.

How Orienteering Works

Orienteering is more than just navigation, it is actual practiced as a sport. It is possible to find ‘orienteering events’ which include courses for beginners and experts. To start, you will pick a special map with a course of your choice printed in red. You’ll see a start point (a triangle) and an end point (a large double circle) and you’ll be required to visit a number of specific points along the way, known as ‘control sites’. When you reach the control sites, you’ll see a stake with a triangular red and white nylon flag. There will be an electronic timing device here, which is used to record your time and to prevent cheating. You’ll also carry a small block called a ‘dibber’ which will record your time and download to a computer when you’re finished.

This sport is great for testing your skills with a compass, honing your natural sense of direction and also getting some fresh air and exercise (not to be underrated!).

Tips

Whether you’re taking part in an event or just trying to improve your navigational abilities, you’ll need to be able to use a map and a compass. Orienteering is all about reading and understanding maps drawn at large scale. These will often be 1:10,000 scale.

One tip for this is to keep the map set to match the view. This means you’ll need to constantly turn the map as you go, in order to know what sites you’re looking for. Of course you also need to know which direction you should be heading in, and this is where using a compass helps. That said, the best navigator or orienteer will be able to use the sun, stars and even vegetation to help learn the direction they need to head in.

Another skill that needs to be developed is the ability to judge distance. Interestingly, most people will walk at a rather even length pace and if you can count how many paces it takes you to cover 100m, then this can be used to ascertain how far you’ve walked in a given direction.

But to really master the art of orienteering, you need practice. Over time, you’ll find that you learn to intuitively estimate distance, direction and more much more easily. You’ll become better at looking out for useful landmarks and orienting your map.

Once you manage this, you’ll find you become inherently more aware of your surroundings in daily life. You’ll be more mindful and engaged with the world around you, with more of an idea of which way you came and where you need to go. And so if you ever do get lost, you should be able to quickly and efficiently correct your course!

Five Ways to Buy Land suitable for a Off Grid Home

So, you are looking to buy some cheap land in Ontario - preferably to build an off grid home. What are your options for finding land that is suitable?

#1. Swamp Land with a Dry Island

If you don't mind the mosquitoes, swamp land or marsh land is an excellent option. What you want to do is to find a large swamp that has a dry section in it, effectively an island, and the only way to get to your island is via a boat or plane. (Or hovercraft...)

You then build your home on the dry land, and because it would be impossible (or at least unlikely) for the Ontario government or electricity company to ever want to build electricity poles out to your little island, they will just leave you alone - which means you pay less property taxes by being off grid.


Alternatively, lets say you buy a swamp that has ZERO dry land. Instead you can build your home on stilts or even have a boathouse.


#2. Secluded Island

A good example of such islands in Ontario is any number of islands in Georgian Bay, but the truth is there are many such islands in the vast wilderness of Northern Ontario that you could build on.


It doesn't even have to be a big island. Any large enough chunk of rock will do.


#3. Very Isolated Land

Imagine buying a piece of land that is so isolated there are no roads going to it. The only way there is via plane or helicopter. Or snowmobile, 4-wheeler, or some kind of similar all-terrain vehicle (cough cough, hovercraft).

Typically this would be a piece of land so far north it is deemed "too cold" and "too isolated" by many would be home-buyers, but if isolation is what you crave such a home would be good for you.

Because it is so isolated you will have to rely on getting most of your building materials from the rocks, wood and clay that you find near your home. Transporting building materials to it would be excessively expensive. So if you also want to DIY, a piece of very isolated land is the way to do it.


#4. Land Most People consider to be Useless

There are a variety of reasons why some people might consider a piece of land useless.
  • It might be on a flood plain and get flooded at least once per year.
  • It might be right next to railway tracks and be very noisy multiple times per day.
  • It might be too close to a major airport, and likewise very noisy.
  • The land is unstable due to sinkholes.
  • A piece of land so small that most people consider it to be useless.
  • Complex legal problems with the land (eg. A piece of adjoining land is currently stuck in a legal grey zone such as wherein the city technically owns the driveway of the property, and thus you don't actually own your driveway.)
  • Any number of reasons.
But there are sometimes solutions to these problems.
  • Flood plain? Build a home on stilts.
  • Railway tracks or airport? Build your home underground and soundproof it.
  • Property has sinkholes? Build a shipping container home underground inside a sinkhole that has already collapsed with horizontal beams that stabilize the home.
  • Really tiny property? Build a very skinny house. (And then don't attach it to the local sewer or electrical system.)
  • Legal problems with the driveway? Don't use the driveway, instead get a bicycle or a Paramotor*

* In case you are wondering, this is a Paramotor. Who needs a car when you can fly?


#5. Very Mountainous or Rocky Land

Good luck with your sewer or water systems with this particular location. Or electricity.

If a region or property is basically one huge rock it is tricky to build on it. Tricky, but not impossible.

To get electrical poles out to the home a person would need to drill holes into the rocks to place the poles, and the cost of doing so - depending upon on how far away from electrical grid the home is - makes it unfeasible.

Thus solar panels and wind turbines suddenly make more sense.

Living Off-Grid: A Guide to Self-Sufficiency

Do you dream of living off-grid? You might want to live off-grid to be prepared for economic collapse or a viral pandemic. Perhaps you're worried about a natural catastrophe such as an earthquake or tornado. Maybe you're fed up with the rat race of life in the concrete jungle, and just want to try your hand at living off the land, as our ancestors did.

It's a romantic notion, however, the realities of it can be much more difficult than most people realize. Modern society has let us specialize in such a way that most of us lack many of the basic skills necessary to survive off the grid for an extended period of time.

Before you make the jump, consider how far off the grid you truly want to go. Keep in mind that going off-grid is an on-going process, so you'll need patience and resourcefulness to make it work.

Written by an Eagle Scout who helped his father build his own log cabin off the grid in Eastern Washington, the family then lived in the cabin for six years in the '80's, and the son returned to live from 2007 to 2012. Off-grid living experiences vary along a continuum of intensity. At one end of the spectrum is a longer commute into town, part of which is on a dirt road. At the other end is a house only accessible on horseback or by float plane that restocks provisions once a month or less. Consider these factors to determine where on the spectrum you want to be.

Primary Factors

General Region - Think first about the general area of the country where you'd like to live. Each region has pros and cons from weather to wildlife or the people who live there.
  • Northwest - large game animals, like-minded individuals, and natural splendor, but a cold climate
  • Southwest - warm weather, game animals, freedom-loving people, but risk of drought
  • Great Plains - space and climate for growing your own food, but risk of tornados and limited self-defense options
  • Mid-South - mild climate, variety of game animals and low-population density, but risk along New Madrid fault
  • Mid-Atlantic - mild climate for growing your own food, and friendly people, but risk of hurricanes and flooding
  • Alaska - long regarded as the final frontier, it has a deserved reputation for difficult living conditions, but the hardiest do make it happen

Annual Weather – Season weather variations will have a daily impact on the off-grid living experience.
  • Harsh winters mean extensive preparation for staying warm. Longer periods of cold also shorten a garden’s growing season.
  • Hot summers mean dealing with the heat. Off-grid power systems are not able to supply air conditioning.

Natural Disasters – What is your risk tolerance for these sorts of disasters? Are you willing to take the extra steps necessary to prepare for these possibilities?
  • Is the location you’re considering prone to hurricanes or tornadoes or flooding?
  • Is the location safe in the event of earthquakes or volcanic eruptions?
  • Are you willing to accept any danger from wildfire in the summer months?

Secondary Factors

Terrain - This is related to the specific piece of property you're considering.
  • Do you want flat land or hills? Steeper hills will add a level of challenge every day.
  • Do you want to live on the plains, or in the woods? In the northern hemisphere, the north facing side of a hill will see less sunshine and be cooler than a south facing hillside. Conifers grow more densely on northern slopes.
  • Do you want a stream on your property? Do you want to be near a lake or a pond?

Seclusion
  • How close do you want to be to your nearest neighbor?
  • Do you want to find a likeminded community or live in complete isolation?
  • How far do you want to be fro the nearest town? You will most need to obtain some provisions - what level of convenience do you require?
  • Is your location defensible?

After you’ve decided on the general and specific requirements you want and need for your off-grid dwelling, your search will be more efficient. Remember, however, that you will likely need to be flexible and make some concessions on smaller issues in order to get what you want on the bigger issues.

Water

Water is essential for life and you must have access from your property. There are several requirements a water source must meet to be suitable:

  • Cleanliness - the water must be clean for drinking, ideally without requiring filtration or purification.
  • Proximity - the water source should be close to the dwelling. You don’t want to walk half a mile to a spring if you can avoid it.
  • Supply - the volume of water and replenishment rate must be sufficient for regular daily use through all the seasons.

Different locations lend themselves to different water source types.

  • Well - a vertical shaft drilled to access underground water. Wells are common because they are generally safe and reliable, but they can be expensive to drill. Determining where to drill can be done with electro-seismic technology, or by dowsing.
  • Spring - where subsurface water emerges to the surface. Cost is low, but the location may be far from the dwelling.
  • Surface water - stream, river, lake or pond. Cost is low, but such sources are subject to contamination and seasonal variation.
  • Rain water harvesting - rain water itself is safe to drink, but collecting surfaces may be polluted. Unpredictability and low volume mean that rain collection will likely be a supplement to other sources.
  • Melting snow - the amount of water obtained from the snow is often small, and is not available year round. It’ll do in a pinch.
It is worth time and effort to make sure there is enough water for your off-grid home. It is wise to have more than one source as backup for true self-sufficiency. Many scenarios from drought to freezing can lock up valuable water – be prepared for any possibility. It even pays to have an emergency supply stashed in barrels or jugs.

Food Production

An important component of increasing your independence is producing your own food. You can't be self-sufficient if you rely on the grocery store for your most basic needs. Consider the following choices:

Grow your own food in a garden

Local climate determines which plants you can grow and when, so spend some time learning about your plant hardiness zone, earliest and latest expected frost dates, and summer heat impacts. This will help you make the best choices for the food you want to grow.
Be aware that pests large and small, from insects to deer, will be interested in partaking of the fruits of your labor. Spend some time researching preventative measures for insects and be prepared to erect a fence around your garden for deer and other large animals.
In a garden of sufficient size, watering can present a challenge when living off-grid. Energy is required to pump water, and that energy comes at a premium. Consider rain harvesting and buried seep systems to reduce water waste through evaporation.

Gather from local sources

There may be foods in your location that grow naturally and can be gathered to supplement your garden. Local berries and seeds, honey, and fruit make nice additions to the menu.
Visit the local farmer’s market for more options.

Go hunting

Learn about the game animals that live in your area and what methods are available for harvesting.
Deer, upland birds, waterfowl and other wildlife help the off-grid family live in greater independence.

Raise domestic animals for food

  • Chickens are a staple on most homesteads – they’re easy to care for and provide both eggs and meat.
  • Turkeys and ducks provide meat and eggs.
  • Goats can be used to help clear shrubbery, and can be milked. Be aware that their milk will taste like what they’ve been eating, this can be good or bad.
  • Cows are labor intensive and expensive to keep fed (buy the land or buy the food), however, they produce abundant milk and meat.
  • Pigs have been a staple on farms, but take care when cooking and eating to be safe from the diseases they can get and pass on to humans.

Finally, there will be foods that are too labor intensive to be grown, grow in a different climate than your home, or compete with other demands for your time. These foods might include, among others, wheat, oats, sugar, salt, fruits, nuts, coffee and spices. You may need to purchase these items directly or find someone with whom you can do some bartering.

Clothing

Not often discussed in many guides to off-grid living is the topic of clothing. It is mentioned here as a reminder of its importance and acknowledgement of the continuum of self-sufficiency. Clothing is effectively go-everywhere shelter, and as such, is critical for life and health.

  • Buy it - Stock-up on items that will wear out and need to be replaced. Depending on how long and how far off the grid one intends to live, this could become an expensive prospect.
  • Stitch it - Buy the cloth needed for clothing, and then taking the time to cut and stitch it together.
  • Kill it - Use the hides of harvested wildlife or domestic animals for leather. You must tan the leather before you can use it. Coats, pants, shoes and more can be made with leather. The original North Americans did this for centuries and lived well doing it.
  • Grow it - Raise sheep or llamas for wool, shear them, and make your own clothing from scratch. The skills and time required put this out of reach for most people, just one example of how specializations have made our lives more convenient. How far off-grid do you want to go?

Clothing requirements will vary with the local weather. A hot summer, cold winter and wet spring will all require different apparel. Off-grid living means hard work, and your clothes should be up to the task.

Access

Snowy RoadOne challenge of living off-grid often includes just driving home. By the nature of the experience, the distances are longer and the roads are primitive. This means dirt, gravel, mud, ruts, bumps, washboard, steep stretches, blind corners and limited passing room. There may be little to no maintenance.

Get a 4x4
  • An older four wheel drive vehicle with locking hubs and limited slip differentials is really only two wheel drive in 4x4 mode, but should be able to pull you through up to ten inches snow and a couple inches of mud.
  • A modern vehicle with traction control and the ability to lock all four wheels will go through considerably deeper snow, but that’s just a short cut and not a long term solution.
  • You do not want your vehicle to be a weak link. Are parts available? Can you do repair work yourself?
  • Consider ground clearance, vehicle size, cargo capacity, power and fuel efficiency.
Get a Snowplow
  • This is recommended if living in a location where more than ten inches of snow may accumulate at any point through the winter.
  • Alternatively, mount a snowblower on a tractor.
  • Snowplowing is fantastic fun, but it’s hard on a vehicle. You can pay someone else to have all the fun and wreck their truck, but you trade away your independence in the process.

Alternate Transportation
  • Snowmobiles go far and go fast, good for locations where there's too much snow to remove.
  • Motorcycles are more fuel efficient than cars or trucks, but can't carry much.
  • Cross-country skis but calories instead of petroleum, but there's only so much time in the day to get everything else done.
  • The same thing can be said about a bicycle for summer travel.

Every choice has consequences. The farther away you live from population, the more complicated transportation becomes. Remember Richard Proenneke and his story One Man's Wilderness? He obtained supplies by monthly visits from a float plane. How far off-grid do you want to live?


The Off-Grid Home

Exterior

The form of an off-grid home closely follows its function. There is less room for decorative or energy consuming features than there are in a grid-tied home. Off-grid homes derive their beauty from their efficiency and mindful construction.

Basic Protection
  • A home is shelter from the elements. It must protect from heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow.
  • A home should protect from natural disasters, especially those possible in the area of construction.
  • A home should keep out human invaders - build a burly door and use deadbolts.
  • Off-grid homes must keep out the local critters, from bears to chipmunks.

Home Construction
  • Costs are related to the materials used for construction and the skills required to do the building.
  • Build you own log home and save money with some training, ingenuity and time.
  • Use shipping containers. Forty foot containers and abundant and cheap, but require expense or help to get in place.
  • Build your home of bricks, blocks or hay bales.
  • Build a frame house.
  • Bury a rebar reinforced cement bunker into a hillside.

Self-Defense

Criminal activity is related to population size – more crime happens where there are more people. Criminal activity is also related to population density – more crime happens when people live closer together. People are at their best when few and far between.

Off-grid living does not guarantee safety, however. The wise person living off-grid will prepare for the worst and hope for the best, the same reason we have fire extinguishers.

  • Firearms are great equalizers. Pistols, rifles, and shotguns all have their place in home defense.
  • Practice weapons handling and use.
  • You may have enough room for a range – be sure of your target and what lies beyond. Have a good backstop.
  • Buy more ammunition than you use, and maintain a stash as you would with food.
  • Get a backup weapon in case you run low on ammo. eg. Compound bows or crossbows are pretty easy to use with minimal practice required. Longbows and recurve bows require more training to learn how to use properly, but are more versatile.

Sentry systems can provide early warning of any visitors, although there are power supply challenges for off-grid homes. You may decide it is worth a separate dedicated power system, or a larger primary system. Mechanical systems are possible, but complicated and of questionable reliability.

For those anticipating the worst, some people build hidden structures with secret entries or escape routes. Others build these spaces directly into their homes.


Interior

All homes are designed to provide some interior comfort. People need space to sleep, areas for cooking and eating, and bathroom space for bathing and toilet functions. Homes must also provide some space for reading and talking, playing games and thinking, a space for recreation and downtime. A fireplace can make this room especially lovely.

Before beginning construction, sketch out some floor plan ideas. In an off-grid home, efficiency is key. Bigger is not better. Large homes cost more to build, take more effort to maintain and more energy to keep warm. Off-grid living naturally requires some adjustments, and learning how to live in a smaller home is one of them.

Plumbing

Living off-grid means increased independence – this is true regarding liberty and responsibility. Practically speaking, you will probably be doing much of the work on your home, including internal systems. If you’re not doing the actual work, you will at least be providing guidance. Study up!

  • Conventional grid-tied homes are plumbed with metal pipe and threaded fittings for water supply. Installation requires knowledge and experience, and these plumbing systems burst if frozen. Neither lead, copper or steel are ideal for an off-grid home.
  • PEX tubing comes in flexible coils or ten foot long “sticks,” is easy to cut and bend, and fittings can be tightened by hand. PEX won’t burst when frozen, though when it does freeze, it can’t be thawed by pouring boiling water on it like a steel pipe because heat doesn’t transfer well.


Drainage plumbing is not very exciting for any home – grid-tied or off-grid, the simple, functional choice is ABS plastic. The key is to provide adequate support and maintain a consistent drainage angle – you do not want to deal with a plugged drain line of any sort at any time. Do it right the first time and then forget about it.

Heating water requires a great deal of energy, good for our planet as the oceans do so well at moderating temperature extremes, but challenging for the off-grid dweller.

Electric water heaters are impossible in 99% of off-grid configurations, so other options must be considered.
Tankless propane water heaters have the best combination of efficiency and convenience, but they do burn through a great deal of propane.
Solar water heaters, from the simple black plastic bag hung on a tree branch to the more elaborate glass tube systems used in South America have great potential, but are only viable in certain climates or during certain times of the year.
It is possible to heat small batches on the stove. This works for cooking, cleaning, and bathing, if you have the patience for it.


Electrical

Off-grid means not connected to the electricity grid, so this is where the rubber meets the road in terms of the living experience. In town, you can plug in your toaster, microwave and hair dryer and run them all at the same time. Off-grid, you may not be able to use even one of these energy hogs.

Electrical systems need to balance two factors: supply and demand. Off-grid systems are only able to provide so much supply, so the living experience requires many compromises in demand. If you find value in the overall experience, these compromises will only be minor inconveniences.

Off-Grid Electrical Power Supply Solutions
  • Solar Panels (photovoltaic cells) – Solar systems are common, advanced, and the price generally drops every year. They work well and knowledge about them is widespread. Solar panels are a great option for off-grid power.
  • Windmills – To live where wind alone is enough to power a house, it would need to be blowing more than half the time. Windmills must be distant from any obstructions including trees or buildings. For most locations, a windmill makes a nice supplement to a predominately solar powered system.
  • Generators – They can be powered by gasoline, diesel, and propane. They are used when power demand temporarily exceeds supply, for example, when pumping water from the well to a higher elevation storage tank. Demand may exceed supply when there is a period of rainy or cloudy weather, or during the winter months when the sun doesn’t spend as much time in the sky. Reliance on a generator and the fuel it burns is a measure of dependence on the System.
  • Hydroelectric plants – These efficiently convert the mechanical kinetic energy of falling water into electrical energy. They require moving water of sufficient volume, and not all properties have an adequate stream or river for this purpose.
  • Bicycle – The average recreational cyclist can sustain an output of about 170 watts, and peak at 220 watts. (For reference, Tour de France cyclists sustain 400 watts and peak at 450 watts.) An off-grid home cyclist can power a laptop and a CFL blub.
  • Additional components of all systems include batteries, charge controller, wires and inverter.

Off-Grid Electrical Power Demand
  • Electrical power demand is expressed in watts, which is equal to volts multiplied by amps. Off-grid living requires basic electrical understanding.
  • All electrical appliances have a label that includes information about power demands. Look for the number that precedes the “W.”
  • A stereo might draw 40W, a laptop 70W, a toaster 1500W.
  • Light bulbs are named by the amount of power they pull: 40W, 60W, 75W, etc.
  • Not found in off-grid homes: electric water heater; electric clothes dryer; electric stove; or air conditioner.

Off-Grid Electrical Power Calculations
  • Add up all the wattage numbers for appliances you want to be able to run at the same time, and add 50% to that total.
  • The 50% fudge factor allows for peak loads which may exceed your expectations and conversion losses.
  • Off-grid power systems become prohibitively expensive when trying to attain the numbers of a grid-tied home, so demand must be reduced.
  • Peak power for a small cabin system is about 2000W.
  • You won’t notice much difference between living off-grid and downtown with a 6000W system.


Energy is power use over time – watt-hours, or kilowatt-hours. Energy demands determine minimum capacity of the batteries and solar panels. To calculate, multiply the power used by each appliance times the amount of time the appliance is in use, and add the resulting products.

To determine the requirements for a solar array, more math is required that considers the amount of sunshine each day on a monthly and annual basis. Consult more detailed guides to assemble your off-grid electrical supply system.

Communications

Most people who live off-grid still want to be able to talk to family and friends across the distance.

  • Depending on the distance from a community, it might be possible to install a landline phone. A basic corded phone requires no additional electricity to operate.
  • Cell coverage is often spotty in places where people live off grid, and purported signal boosters are not always as helpful as they claim – buyer beware!
  • Satellite phones and systems which also include TV channels and internet are increasingly the choice for people living off-grid. Among their downsides are the continual electric draw and the exchange of some privacy and anonymity for convenience.

Food Storage

Refrigerators and freezers have only been available for the household since the 1920’s, but today we can’t imagine life without them. Low temperatures slow bacterial action and keep food safe for extended periods.

  • Standard electric refrigerators and freezers require too much energy to be used off-grid
  • Specially made solar powered refrigerators tie into a dedicated photovoltaic cell and battery bank, but they are expensive to set up.
  • Propane refrigerators use a flame to compress the refrigerant, and work splendidly, but they are expensive to buy and expensive to operate.
  • It is possible to use the sun as the source of heat for a thermal compressor, but the method is not available to the household consumer. It’s possible to do it yourself or pay mega bucks.

Today we enjoy the relative luxury of food in cans with multi-year long shelf lives. Buying food in cans is a valid component of a long term food storage plan, but not the whole solution.

  • Home canning is a process for preserving food in glass jars that is still practiced today and is a good choice for people living off-grid and growing their own food.
  • Cellars are a nice compliment to canning. Surrounded on four or five sides by earth, a cellar maintains a consistent temperature of 55ºF (plus or minus about five degrees ) throughout the year. This slows bacterial action somewhat.

Before refrigeration, salting, pickling, smoking and drying were used to preserve food.

  • All of these processes remove or replace the water in which bacteria grow, and protect the food from spoiling.
  • All of these processes reduce nutritional value, including vitamin C, which is why sailors eating food preserved this way suffered from scurvy.
  • These methods are time consuming and difficult - how far off the grid do you want to live?

A wise off-grid food storage plan includes redundancy and variety.

Heating and Cooking

Off-grid dwellings do not use electricity for heating or cooking. Pellet stoves are not often used in off-grid applications because they require electricity. The most common solution for heating is burning wood.
  • Wood was originally burned in a fireplace, usually built of stone or brick, but they are notoriously inefficient.
  • A fireplace insert is a stove that sits inside the fireplace opening and increases the heating efficiency by collecting and radiating heat back into the room that would normally have just escaped up the chimney. A large faceplate helps even more. Inserts often, but not always, use a fan to spread more heat by convection.
  • A third option is a free standing wood stove that radiates heat from all sides. They do not use fans, but they require more floor space as they must be placed away from walls and furniture on all sides.
  • Wood cook stoves reduce dependence on the System, and have a long history of use. It's a greater challenge to cook a turkey, but that much more satisfying when done right. Wood cook stoves do extra duty in adding heat to the home and providing a backup in the absence of propane. No self-respecting off-grid home should be without a wood cook stove.


Wood warms you when you work it, and warms you when you burn it. Every step is joyous. The smell of fresh cut wood mingling with saw exhaust, the sight of big chips pouring out beneath a sharp chain, the satisfying “whack” of a well-placed swing of the splitting maul – these are the rewards of using wood for heat, and that's before you set it on fire.

Some off-grid homes use a propane furnace to supplement wood burning.

  • This makes sense when other appliances such as water heater, fridge, and cook stove also use propane.
  • Cooking with propane is superior to even electric in many ways, so much so that many grid-tied homes have made the switch. It’s no sacrifice to use propane for cooking in an off-grid home.

Conclusion

Life is good off the grid. It's harder, but the victories are sweeter. Those living off the grid will have an advantage when the country goes sideways. Take your first small step toward independence today.

Money Shuffling Companies and Unhappiness

I find great joy doing DIY projects. I get a great deal of fulfillment and happiness from building things with my own hands. Earlier today for example I put on some of the finishing touches on a new flatbow and then took it out to the garage to practice with it (and test its accuracy).

Years ago I worked at a series of what I call "money shuffling companies". They included a pension company, an insurance company, a stock portfolio brokerage and several other companies that don't actually build anything. Each of these jobs were very unfulfilling and regardless of how much money or paper I shuffled around working there, I never felt like I had accomplished anything.

Instead I developed the belief that I - and everyone else working there - was leeching off the rest of society. Syphoning off money as we shuffled the money around, performing a service that could and probably should be done by a computer program.

At least 90% of the work could be done by a computer program. Much of the work I did there was data entry (which could have been replaced by a scanner and a robot to feed the scanner), the sorting of files and folders onto shelves of records (which could have been replaced with digital records), the delivery of files (could be done by a robot with a bar code scanner), and the boxing up of old files (which should just be recycled thanks to the digital records).

The only staff member needed would be a robot repairman and people (lawyers, doctors, experts) that could not be replaced by a robot... Although to be honest, if we replaced lawyers with robot lawyers I think we would be making a great step towards real justice.

There were many other people working there that were likewise unnecessary. Accountants, human resources, management. All of these occupations would be made obsolete if most of the staff were replaced by computers. Accountants doing payroll for hundreds of employees? Not needed. HR for hiring new employees? Not needed. Management for twiddling their thumbs and firing employees? Extremely useless.

And middle management? Pffff!!!


So what would all the people put out of work by computers and robots do with themselves???

Farm, hunt, build things, science, build robots, become astronauts maybe, explore the laws of nature and the universe. Gain a sense of fulfillment by actually accomplishing things instead of just shuffling paper and money around. Imagine all the things society could accomplish if we wasted less time shuffling money and paper around.

Imagine for a moment if you wasted 35 years of your life working for an insurance company - knowing that your job could and should be replaced by a robot - and knowing the insurance companies primary employees are lawyers there to reduce the amount given to people who signed up for insurance. In other words, screwing over people the company rightfully owes money to.
And then one day the company fires you in favour of a younger employee who can be paid half as much.

Wouldn't you feel like you spent most of your life working for an greedy corporation that was solely motivated by money and had no interest in helping customers?

Having wasted your life, you would likely think back to past opportunities where you could have changed your life and found something you know would have been more fulfilling. It might have been paid less, it might have been hard work physically (building things often are), but you would have been happy, physically buff (a nice bonus), and have job security.

 Some people go through many years working in an office and dying of boredom and unhappiness. Such people often dream of giving up the city life, moving to the countryside to become farmers, adopting a nomadic lifestyle, buying a cabin up north - but many of these people never do because of fear, laziness or commitments they are unwilling to break. eg. Taking your spouse and kids and moving to a place far away in the wilderness seems like a huge risk when compared to staying in your comfort zone in the city and working in a concrete office building shuffling money around.

So my advice for those people who seek a life with more happiness and more of the great outdoors? Get a hobby that takes you outdoors. Canoeing, camping, archery, bowhunting, woodscraft, tracking, bird watching, dog sledding, etc. At least then you are only wasting X number of hours per week in an office place and you are finding your fulfillment in other ways.

Mankind wasn't meant to waste their lives away inside concrete blocks. We crave the outdoors. We crave the wind in our face, swimming in crystal blue lakes and the thrill of exploring the wilderness.
